90’s Grunge.. Lim Style

Phillip Lim, whom is a fashion designer, known for his clean lines and tailored style has decided to show us a different side of who he is for the Spring 2013 RTW Runway.   According to Nicole Phelps of style.com, Lim used an approach called “cut up”, which is what was also described as a mix and match technique. Though America has seen this style before during our grunge era in the early nineties, Lim has sophisticated it a bit ;remaining true to his roots and symmetrical designed style.

Viewing the entire collection, Lim showed us everything from  florals with plaids, sporty jackets, leather jackets, jumpsuits, summer dresses and skirts. He even did interesting techniques with his denim, especially the patchwork that we saw towards the end of the runway show.

I like seeing this from Phillip Lim because it gives me a sense that there is no limit in fashion. Lim will always be one of my favorite designers because he never disappoints. It will be interesting to see what he does for Target because I heard there is a collaboration ahead with the fashion designer and the Superstore.

Black and White but not Red all Over

Its about that time again, flowers bloom, weather gets warmer and designers bring out their color and patterns to scream its Spring time at the top of their lungs or  in this particular case the end of the runway. While this is the normal screen play that us outsiders get accustomed to, this year there was a little spin on the words that were recited and black and white was just as much into the lime light as neon orange and green.

Designers such as BCBG, Balmain and Alexander Wang all followed this trend. The trick is if you are going to use black, white or a mixture the goal is to make it interesting or people will be bored to tears with the lack of fun and light in what is showcased. As talented as these designers are they were not about to let that happen and if you need proof take a visit to style.com for some in your face black and white love.

Alexander Wang showed us his take on the trend by making dresses, tops and skirts with full  cut outs, creating an illusion of a garment sliced into many pieces. Balmain known for his theatrical shoulders used the black and white idea in a jacket and suit pant look and BCBG using a plain white silhouette added black detail using lace and leather for a dramatic show.

So bring out your black and go buy that white because these colors are going to be unusually popular this Spring, which goes to  the idea that less is more and black and white will always remain classic.

Temple Attire

Today was a day of great holiness for the Jewish faith, a congregation of like-minded people coming together to repent their sins and and show off their latest shoe and clothing finds for the Fall season.

How did I know that showing up for services this morning was going to be the next New York City Fashion Week. While woman were wearing cute black dresses and their most sleekest high heel boots, the men were wearing suits and some cool new kicks. I understand that temple is a place of worship but witnessing the clothing today has made it clear that their is is now a high standard in the presence in god.

Don’t worry if you weren’t the best dressed in the room today, you will have a year to be on that future Jewish “AList”.

Game On

It only took the second month of 2012 to have our first snow, which in my eyes means Old Man Winter has come here for quickie and Spring, whom patiently is waiting is glad it did.

Already the warm weather clothing is making its way onto the racks in the department stores, however it is just sitting there due to Mother Nature playing a nice game of Russian roulette.

Gaia her self was not the only one playing games, Designers such as Nicole Miller, Kenzo and Alexander Wang, were among there fashion peers that participated in the “Game On “ Trend. I wouldn’t be surprised if the book by Suzanne Collins The Hunger Games (now being made into a movie) was apart of the inspiration behind the needle. This is not the first time we have seen designers take an interest in active Sportswear, more than ever are we seeing different labels take the plunge into the Wide World Game of Sports.

Modesty is not the Best Policy

Sorry to all the Grandmas out there who said that showing there midriff was not appropriate for young girls, but  what do you do when it is all over the Spring Runways and it is “en vogue”.

Acne, Band of Outsiders, and Bill Blass were among the many to carry out this trend, who decided that going to the gym was more than just an idea. Though all these artists executed it differently, they all had one thing in common–the forbidden mid section. Acne used a more juxtaposition look with a hard leather top and a maxi skirt, whereas Band of Outsiders went more towards the sporty idea with a  cropped sweater top, knew length skirt and white jacket  and those at Bill Blass took the trend to the high seas, with a nautical cropped top, navy blue jacket and white short shorts.

This is defiantly not the time to be modest, and a great time to economize.

Have No Fear.. Spring is Here!

While the weather has been in constant debate recently,  the fashion industry is steady and focused for what it wants to show for those warmer days of the week.

According to the popular fashion site style.com, Spring trends are going back into the time of the roaring twenties and sock hopping fifties, designers are playing with muted pastels, oceanic inspired pieces in a midriff, sporty way.

I am excited to see how this plays out when it trickles down into the stores and lets not forget about the announced color Tangerine Tango that will take vibrant, electric  spin on things.

So get out your inner flapper, and give your gym clothes a meaning to be noticed while we see these trends show their face throughout the coming months.
